Reflecting on how yoga pants and athletic wear are pushing jeans out of the closet, Bruce Cohen, a partner leading Kurt Salmon’s Retail Private Equity and Strategy Group, explains to The Wall Street Journal’s Private Equity Analyst, “Denim is cyclical. [There have] been slumps, and we’re in one right now. The macro trend is ‘athleisure,’ which spans across all ages, from elementary school to Millennials to suburban middle-age moms.” Cohen adds, “Private equity is still looking at [denim] companies as opportunities. I don’t think anyone saw the boom of athleisure biting into the denim market. But denim has been around since the 1950s and isn’t going anywhere.”
