Women’s apparel sales have been lagging since before the recession, and while sales of accessories like shoes and handbags have charged back, apparel sales remain lackluster, according to a Women’s Wear Daily article. Kurt Salmon retail strategist Arnold Aronson said this lack of consumer interest is caused in part by cost-cutting, which can result in less-exciting products. “The preoccupation by many manufacturers and designers to cost-engineer to make up for big price increases in raw materials and labor has resulted in a reduction in innovation and creative product development,” he said in the article.
