Retailers had reason to celebrate in August as many reported positive same-store sales numbers, according to a Financial Times article. But Kurt Salmon retail strategist Nancy Liu said this strong spending was driven by need more than want, and the U.S. economy isn’t out of the woods yet. “Back-to-school is a time when people need to go back and spend,” she said in the article. “But we’re still a little bit touch and go with the economy.”
