In an effort to make up for lackluster holiday sales, retailers promoted heavily in December, which may have hurt their profit margins, according to an article in Women’s Wear Daily. Faced with an uncertain consumer environment, Kurt Salmon retail strategist Arnold Aronson said retailers need to focus on inventory management. “Retailers that were scarred by the economy aren’t going to get caught with excess inventory,” he said. “Merchandise isn’t like a fine wine. It doesn’t get better with age.”
