How common are EHR failures? Fairly rare, according to Gerard Nussbaum, a health care IT expert at Kurt Salmon. “Having said that, though, total outages do occur.” Nussbaum explains that there are issues that could result in a total EHR failure, from a vendor failure in which the vendor lacks adequate backup facilities to human error that causes the system to go down. To safeguard systems, Nussbaum recommends that providers implement downtime response teams that have clear procedures and are regularly drilled, as well as rigorous change control processes to minimize inadvertent human error.
