“The disposable income among [retailers’] core customers is shrinking,” Al Sambar, retail strategist at Kurt Salmon, explains to Crain’s New York Business when discussing how online shopping company Jet will launch later this spring, aiming to compete with Amazon. Jet will require an annual membership fee for customers and offer prices as much as 20% lower than the competition to persuade shoppers to buy in. Sambar adds, “They’re competing for customer purchases and they do that by extending value.”
