Despite a surprising surge in December, restaurant sales growth will likely slow in early 2013, according to Kurt Salmon’s Restaurant Spending Trajectory.
“The good news is, restaurant sales spiked in December in a way that was reminiscent of sharp increases in December 2006 and 2007, when the economy was stronger,” said Kurt Salmon restaurant strategist Todd Hooper. “Unfortunately, both of those peaks were followed by sharp drops, and current weak consumer sentiment reinforces the idea that growth is likely to slow in the coming months. We can expect a lot of messaging about value in the days ahead.”
