Prom spending is up over $200 from last year, according to a USA Today article. In the article, Kurt Salmon retail strategist Alison Jatlow Levy said teens are spending more in a quest to stand out from their peers. “There’s a general sense of people wanting to be differentiated,” she says. “Going to a national chain and getting the same dress that 18 other girls have is not a chance for me to differentiate myself or express my individuality, which is such an important part of my social experience today.”
