3. How do I show meaningful use?

The second prong of the meaningful use requirement is that the eligible provider show to CMS (or to the State, under the Medicaid EHR incentive program) that they have met the requirements of meaningful use.

2011

In 2011, CMS will not be in a position to accept direct feeds from certified EHRs, so the primary means of demonstrating meaningful use will be via an attestation through a secure CMS website. States will likely have a similar approach for the Medicaid program.

An attestation is a legally binding representation of the accuracy of the statement. Making a false attestation could be considered fraud under the Medicare/Medicaid programs.

The provider will need to supply the results of each of the measures (see above for discussion of objectives and measures), as well as the certified EHR in use.

2012 and beyond

For 2012 and subsequent years, the provider will need to perform the attestation and electronically transmit from the EHR the measures (including the numerator and denominator).
