What attracted you to Kurt Salmon?

In the first place, it was Kurt Salmon’s expertise and industry focus that caught my eye. However, Kurt Salmon’s attractive client portfolio and the possibility to work in different countries as well as with colleagues with different functional focus and its repeatedly winning in its category in the German “Hidden Champions” study on consulting firms made my choice even easier.

How has consulting been different than you anticipated?

The working atmosphere was something I had not expected to be as cooperative as it is at Kurt Salmon. Many colleagues here became friends and I am able to learn from their vast experience and expertise every day, both professionally and personally.

What is the greatest lesson you have learned at Kurt Salmon?

Take any challenges as an opportunity.

Office:

San Francisco

Degrees:

M.S. in management science and engineering, Stanford University; B.A. in economics, Stanford University

What did you do before joining Kurt Salmon?

In 2007 I was the director of Stanford’s Educational Program for Gifted Youth in Beijing.

Why did you choose Kurt Salmon?

Among consulting companies, Kurt Salmon has a uniquely personal and supportive culture. Additionally, while many companies claim a non-hierarchical structure, Kurt Salmon has proven itself so. I work closely with the partners on most projects and have consistently benefited from their informal input.

What is the best part of consulting?

There’s a lot to learn, and you have no choice but to learn it quickly.

What has been your favorite project?

In my first year I was on a strategy project for a leading beauty care retailer. Our task was to project market trends, then analyze drivers of store performance to understand the levers our client could pull to drive revenue. After two weeks of research and analysis, we spent three days with the company’s C-suite leadership. The results of those sessions are driving new growth for the company today.

What is the hardest lesson you’ve learned?

There is a tradeoff between speed and quality in everything. You need both, and the trick is to know how much of each to apply to your task.

What is the best piece of advice you have for applicants?

Do some research on the company and have a customized answer for “Why do you want to work here?” Convey that answer in your cover letter and in your interview.

Office:

Atlanta

Degree:

B.S. in industrial engineering, Georgia Tech

Why did you choose Kurt Salmon?

Kurt Salmon has a big-firm reputation with a small-firm feel. I have the opportunity to work alongside some of the brightest minds in retail and consulting, and Kurt Salmon embraces an open-door and horizontal culture. We have a nurturing and family feel; you’re not treated like “rank and file” or just a number.

What is the best part of consulting?

The learning curve.

What has been your favorite project?

A merchandising and planning transformation for one of the largest and most iconic luxury retailers. It’s one of the best client-consultant partnerships I’ve been a part of—with the most compelling results.

What is the hardest lesson you’ve learned?

The aisle is better than the window, but watch your elbows on the drink cart.

Twenty-two inches is the maximum length of a rolling bag that will fit wheels-first into the overhead.

The seats in the row directly before the exit row do not recline.

What is your favorite industry term?

Plannogramming: in grocery, the art of deciding which products go where and on which shelf—a seemingly simple but really a sophisticated and complicated decision

Düsseldorf

Academic background:

Diplom-Kauffrau at University of Cologne and Kelley School of Business, Indiana University

What did you do before joining Kurt Salmon?

I worked for Procter & Gamble as assistant brand manager and managed homecare brands in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. I decided to go back to consulting, as I prefer working on projects with changing assignments and in close collaboration with colleague and client teams.

What attracted you to Kurt Salmon?

As with most of my colleagues, Kurt Salmon got my attention due to its industry focus on consumer goods and retail—which is a virtual guarantee for projects with great clients and assignments. My decision for Kurt Salmon, though, was largely influenced by the personal and team-oriented atmosphere, which you will often find in very small companies, but not so often in international consulting.

What is the best part of consulting?

Due to varying project assignments with different clients, there is no daily routine in the classical meaning. Consultants take on responsibility early, learn a lot and fast and work closely in mixed teams with colleagues and the client.

What is the hardest lesson you’ve learned?

Communicating complex things clearly and simply—I am still learning.

Tell us something about yourself that people would never guess:

I am a TV series junkie. Gilmore Girls, Grey’s Anatomy and True Blood (although I’m not very good around blood), Lost, The O.C., Gossip Girl, Jericho—you name it. It’s my secret recipe for quick relaxation when traveling back from a client site.

London

Degree:

BA with honors, De Montfort University, Leicester

What did you do prior to joining Kurt Salmon?

I worked at Sainsbury’s Supermarkets, launching a new clothing business. The role covered everything from building an office to implementation of the full Oracle Retail suite—all in record-breaking time. At Marks & Spencer, I held numerous positions in the fashion Buying & Merchandising departments, including product manager for Home Entertainment and merchandiser for Men’s Suits.

Why did you choose Kurt Salmon?

No. 1: The people. A genuine team that has real industry knowledge and experience. No. 2: Global work opportunities. No. 3: Short, interesting projects providing variety and a constant stream of new experiences and learning opportunities.

What is the best part of consulting?

Fast pace, constant learning, international travel opportunities.

What has been your favorite project?

Working for a Chinese sportswear retailer in the Jinjang province, Mainland China.

What is the hardest lesson you’ve learned?

The most simple things are sometimes the most challenging.

What is the best piece of advice you have for applicants?

All experience is good experience even if it may not always feel like it.

What is your favorite industry term?

Rate of sale: a good metric to compare the true performance of a product.

What’s a little-known fact about you?

I am an adventure junkie. Every weekend in the winter season I grab my avalanche receiver, shovel, helmet and snowboard to enjoy the powder in the French or Swiss Alps.

Office:

Atlanta

Degree:

MS Pharmaceutics – Ohio State, MBA – Ohio State

Why did you choose Kurt Salmon?

The health care practice was exclusively focused on the sector where I wanted to build my career. Kurt Salmon values relationships with its clients, and in many cases has been working with repeat clients for more than a decade. This allows you to see the results of previous consulting efforts and develop a rapport with the client, instead of only being there a few months and moving on.

What is the hardest lesson you’ve learned?

You can quickly become irrelevant in consulting – there is always another exceptional firm or cutting-edge idea that has the potential to undermine your position. Relationships that take years to build can disappear as your contacts get fired or take other jobs. I’ve quickly learned that you have to constantly evolve to ensure that clients keep coming to you for advice.

What is your favorite industry fact or term?

The U.S. will spend more than $2.4 trillion on health care in 2011. If the U.S. health care industry were an imaginary country, that country would represent the sixth largest economy in the world (behind only the U.S., China, Japan, India and Germany; and ahead of the U.K., France, Canada and Russia).
